   Firmware Modification

The firmware on the consoles DVD drive is replaced with a modified version which enables the drive to recognize your DVD+R DL discs. This modification does not alter the region code of the console, and so region-specific still applies.

Phat consoles

How to check which drive is in your console-

The faceplate must be removed from your console. Look into the oval shaped hole on the front of the drive to check the color of the tray switch wires. Each model has different colored wires and this is how we can tell the drives apart. The only way to check the firmware revision is to open the console and check on the drive itself.

Hitachi

The oval hole is sealed up on all Hitachi drives. No wires are visible.

Samsung

A red wire and a black wire are both visible in all Samsung drives.

BenQ

Two white wires are visible in all BenQ drives.

Lite-on

Two yellow wires are visible in all Lite-on drives.

Available for fat consoles with the following drives:
  • Hitachi, all revisions
  • Samsung, all revisions
  • BenQ, all revisions
  • Lite-On, all revisions
R300 per console
Consoles can be dropped off and then collected 1hr later.

Slim consoles

The slim console's Lite-On drive comes in two hardware revisions, the differences been the embedded flash chips in the drive controllers. These flash chips are the MXIC (Macronix) and Winbond flash.

How to check which drive is in your console:

The console must be opened to check if you have an MXIC or WINBOND controller. Take out the disc drive, remove the screws, remove the cover and turn it over. Take a look at the MEDIATEK chip and the writing all the way to the bottom. It will either start with 03 or 05.

03=MXIC

05=WINBOND
